Rapid Prototyping
|
| Rapid prototyping is used for the production
of demonstration and functional models using Stereo Lithography and
Selective Laser Sintering techniques. Models range from original
size down to sub-scale.
Both techniques are based on 3D-CAD models. Each component is
developed step by step in layers of up to 1/10 mm.
Advantages of Rapid Prototyping technology are:
- Cost reduction up to 50%.
- Processing time reduction up to 75%.
- High design flexibility to enable short term component modifications.
- Cost effective component production for demonstration purposes
and functional test samples.

The Process
|
Stereolithography:
Components are generated using liquid UV-sensitive polymers that
are cured layer by layer with laser beams.
Selective Layer Sintering:
Component are generated by fusing a powder layer by layer with laser
beams.
Manufacturing Process:
- Generation of a 3D-CAD model, such as CATIA.
- Transmission of CAD data to a laser sintering machine.
- Production of a polystyrene blank using the rapid prototyping
process.
- Production of a ceramic mould from the polystyrene blank.
- Removal of polystyrene from the ceramic mould.
- Pouring of alloy into ceramic mould.
- Removal of ceramic mould from alloy component.
- Machining of component functional surfaces.
