Manufacturing of Space Propulsion Components
Large and small component manufacturing facilities for rocket engine and aerospace applications.
High performance machining of special materials for aerospace applications. Typical materials
include Inconel, Electroplated Nickel, Magnesium, Titanium, High-Strength Aluminium, Plastics,
Carbon Fibre and C/SiC Structures.
|
LARGE COMPONENT MANUFACTURING
The large component manufacturing facility produces aerospace components having a diameter
greater than 500 mm. Typical expertise includes:
 |
Milling and turning of the inner and outer contours of
rocket engine combustion chambers including those of the Ariane 5 engines: Vulcain, Vinci, Aestus and HM-7. |
 |
High performance cutting of exotic alloys
for aerospace applications including Inconel 718, electroplated nickel, magnesium, titanium,
high strength aluminium alloys, carbon fibre reinforced plastics and carbon fibre structures. |
 |
Turning the injector head and the inlet and outlet
manifolds of Vulcain, Vinci and Aestus engines. |
 |
Turning and milling the inner and outer contours of
satellite propellant tanks. |
 |
Integral aluminium structure plates (beam formed network
plates) with complex channel geometries (tolerance > 90% of 0.02 mm requirement) |
 |
Propellant tank shells for satellites up to 1.3 meter
diameter with a wall thickness of 0.8 mm (tolerance 0.02 mm). |
 |
High speed milling of combustion chamber cooling channels,
including those of the Vulcain and Vinci engines. |
 |
Injector head milling, including Vulcain and Vinci
engines. |
 |
Milling of parts for aerospace applications and
development manufacturing. |
 |
Machining the corrugated contours of horns for satellite
applications. |
 |
Turning and milling of aircraft engine components. |
FACILITIES
 |
5-axis machining centre for component parts from 700 x 600
x 500 mm up to 1600 x 1,500 x 1,300 mm. Main spindle speed of 6,000 rpm. |
 |
High speed milling at 24,000 rpm. 208 tooling workplaces
and pallet changer. |
 |
CNC turning of component parts up to 1,500 mm diameter x
3,000 mm long. |
|

SMALL COMPONENT MANUFACTURING
The small component manufacturing facility specialises in producing small and intricate
aerospace components, e.g. the use of drills with a diameter of only 0.13 mm for producing an
injector head for our 1 N thrusters. Areas of expertise includes:

Small component manufacture
Small component machining

Turning of thruster nozzles for satellites including those
used on the 400 N Ariane 5
attitude control system. |
 |
Machining of coaxial injector elements, including those
used on the Ariane 5 Aestus, Vinci and Vulcain 2 thrust chambers. |
 |
Injector head erosion, as performed for the HM-7 thrust
chamber and Vinci engines. |
 |
Turning and milling of valve housings, including those
used on the Ariane 5 main stage cryogenic feed valve and the cryogenic propellant isolation
valve. |
 |
Turning and milling of thrust chamber element plates,
including those used on the Ariane 5 Aestus upper stage engine. |
 |
