RESUS - Subsystem Components
Illustrated functional description of the RESUS subsystem components.
The RESUS submarine rescue system comprises of 6 main subsystem components as follows:

Liquid
Gas Generator
|

Solid
Gas Generator
|
|
Gas Generators
The gas generators are located in the fwd and aft main ballast tanks and are constructed from seawater corrosion resistant materials.
Two types of as generator are available, liquid propellant and solid propellant. The type of gas generator selected depends on the amount of gas required to blow the ballast tanks, the gas temperature and gas composition.
The gas generator is supplied as a fully contained, operational ready, charged package which is hermetically sealed to assure safe handling.
The gas generators can remain in the ballast tanks, maintenance-free, for 10 years. After this time, the generators are to be returned to Astrium Space Transportation for refurnishment.
More information about both types of gas generator can be found here.

Cable Distributor (CD)
|
Cable Distributor (CD)
The cable distributor is located in the
main ballast tank. It is the connecting
point to each of the gas generators from
outboard via the pressure
hull feed through to
the CTU inboard.
The number of
connections
depends on
the number
of gas generators. |
|

Remote Starting Device (RSD)
|
Remote Starting Device (RSD)
The RSD provides an additional means to manually initiate the gas generators should it not be possible to access the CTU. The RESUS system provides for two RSD's located at different stations to ensure that the gas generators can be initiated when needed. Each RSD is sealed and shall
only be used in an emergency
case.

Diving Depth Measuring Device (DDMD)
|
Diving Depth
Measuring Device
(DDMD)
The DDMD measures diving depth as a function of water pressure. After manual initiation of RESUS from either the CTU or an RSD, the DDMD determines the number of gas generators to be activated according to the prevailing diving depth. If RESUS has been set to automatic operation, then the DDMD will automatically activate the gas generators at the predefined critical diving depth.

Control and Test Unit (CTU)
|
Control and Test
Unit (CTU)
The control of RESUS is set at the CTU to either 'manual mode', or 'automatic mode'. In manual mode, the gas generators can be initiated from either the CTU, or one of two remote RSD's. If set to automatic mode, then the gas generators will be initiated automatically at critical diving depth.
A CTU storage battery is continuously charged from the submarine's power supply system. Hence, RESUS remains fully functional in the event of an onboard power supply failure.
The CTU can also test that the system electrical circuits are intact and fully functional. All sub-assemblies contained within the CTU are arranged as slide-in units, which can be easily removed for inspection and maintenance. The major electronic elements are arranged as replaceable printed circuit boards.

Generator Toggle Unit (GTU)
|
Generator Toggle
Unit (GTU)
During installation
and maintenance the
GTU is inserted into the CTU
housing. It switches the state of
the gas genarators between 'Safe' and 'Armed'. |
Location of Components Within the Submarine
The figure below shows the location of the RESUS components in the submarine.
The Gas Generators and Cable Distributors are located in the fwd and aft ballast tanks, while the remaining components are located inside the pressure hull.
